These are some of the most remote islands in the world - places where the locals live off the land. There are no hotels, shops or restaurants. If there is drought, there is no food. If someone gets sick, they often die.

In this visual essay, Stuff’s Iain McGregor explores a part of a lifestyle few of us can imagine on a visit to the lands between Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands.

Christchurch-based McGregor visited the islands as the New Zealand Geographic photographer of the year.
